When I first saw the ending it was early in the morning while getting ready for work when I was able to try to watch my digital recording. Honestly, I teared up and had to turn the TV off. Something about the haunting music - the cover of the Beach Boys "God Only Knows", just tugged so hard at my heartstrings, I knew if I didn't turn the sound off I would start to cry - even though I didn't like Bill for most of the last two seasons. (Even Bill Plaxton mentioned that playing the character became harder as he became more and more constricted)... but I digress.
The tears I think were more due to the fact that the series was dying and I really had become invested in Barb, Marge and to a lesser extent Nikki.
I love this board because it is allowing us to process the fact that the Henrickson family will not be going on any new journeys with us. For all of us it was the last first time we would be together with Barb, Nikki and Margene in Honeybee too.
I remember when my Dad passed away in 2004, I called his phone number every day, just to hear his voice again on his voice mail. It was like he was still around you know? Then one day, my mom changed the voice mail and he was really and truly gone, forever. That's kind of how it feels to visit this board now.
There was this snide remark left by a disgruntled person on the HBO website snarking "this was a fictional show! These people were not real!!"
I think the fact that those of us who loved the show are still reeling from the impact of Bill's death and the way the show ended, validates the decision the writers and producers made to kill off Bill.
Years ago in the film industry there was a protocol in the business that characters who were evil or involved in crimes or habits of vice could not get a happy ending. I think it was the Hayes rules. Maybe in a way, that's what the writers were doing with the finale. Bill finally pays for his lack of foresight. In a way, the messy ending with Carl began with the intrusion of the media on their quiet street once Bill publicly outed the family in that flamboyant fashion. He created the beginning of his own demise when the media trucks ruined Carl's yard. It never would have happened if he had paid attention to Barb.
Think about her unveiling as the Prophet. She had enough foresight to try to sabotage the campaign by leaking the information about Ana. Call it prophetic or feminine intuition, she was on the money. Carl may have been unraveling, but it might have played out differently if his pseudo famous neighbor hadn't created a media circus which ruined his lawn.
I've joined NYChic's new forum "Beyond the Compound" I think it will be like survivor therapy after this stupendous season 5.
