Ok, just had a question.
Is it commonplace for children of poly families to take the last name of their mother (rather than their father) ?
My understanding, and i could be wrong is that it is. With the exception being first wife and her children.
For example Bill and Joey both have lois's last name of Henrickson, when their father's name is Harlow... b/c their mother was 2nd wife. right?
Going on that theory though- why does Nicki have Roman's last name? Adaleen was what? wife number 4? and yet she has his name (Grant) as well.
Is this a rule that doesn't apply when your husband / fatehr is prophet?
I'm confused...

I think it is probably because he was the prophet--can't imagine the prohet not having his name given to all his children

Hi
from my research it actually seems that most polygamist sects including the actual FLDS; the women do take the husband's last name; if not officially on paper; it is what they and their kids are known as within the sect. Another tradition amongst polygamists and, it has also been the case with the mainstream LDS historically, is for someone to have their mom's surname as a middle name and then their fathers surname. The LeBarons had middle names like this but they were from people several generations back. The women of the Kingston clan in order to avoid detection as not only being polygamist but incestous; take a random name out of the phoneback; strangely it seems they are usually Swedish surnames.

So in some poly families and compounds people (women and children) go by one name (their husband / fathers) but legally have a different name? Wow, how confusing...
If you're going to have your children "go by" their fathers name, why not just give them their father's last name on paper? I mean does it have to do with the whole "secrecy" of poly in general - or is there more specific reasoning?

Maybe in the show, Joey and Bill go by Henrickson because Lois felt that her last name is superior to Frank's since her dad used to be Prophet? It also would set her children apart from the rest of Frank's children, which would be something Lois would want to do.

I thought Roquet was his first name and that they called him Dr Roquet as they would have Dr. Adam or whatever. Although one would think give that child a nickname! I just vaguely recall someone's saying Dr. Roquet Walker. Still could be two last names (mom's and JJ's), but there are some unusual names floating around.

Charlotte, you're right. I looked it up on IMDB, and he's Dr. Roquet Walker. Which would explain why Nicki called him Dr. Rocket - it was probably his childhood nickname - or possibly the way it was always pronounced.
On the subject of names, I wonder what the reason is for the unusual first names, or unusual spellings of common names. JJ's wife's name, for example, is spelled "Malinda", not "Melinda." And Cara Lynn, not Carolyn. (Though I think there's a hint there of Carolyn Jessop.)
I can see that they might want to use Biblical names that sound old-fashioned to our ears, but why the odd spellings of current names?

I do think in some cases officially the children do at least have the dad's name; I believe Elissa Wall was actually Elissa Wall growing up (and her dad's surname is Wall, mum's is Steed), same with Carolyn Jessop and her children.
Marionj; I'm pretty sure the odd spellings of names result from the fact there are just so many of them in one family; that they have to just resort to unusual spellings or slightly different pronunciations of names to keep things individual. I have noticed similar when looking at my ancestors in the Victorian era, sometimes they will have slight variations of names even amongst siblings of the same family. Though one branch of the family were rather stubborn and used the same set of 10 names for everyone including in the chronological order their children were born, and their children did the same so there are many cousins born at a similar time with the exact same forenames which makes my genealogy work extremely confusing!
