Does anyone know why seasons are so far apart and why there are so few episodes? Maybe BL is not as popular as we think and not very profitable? I can't remember any other HBO series being like this. I mean, a year between seasons? It doesn't take a year to film 9 episodes.
Your theories?

I've been wondering the same exact thing.
I think Big Love is extremely popular... There is no other show like it. The mafia shows, gay dramas, reality shows, emergency room shows... All those are a dime a dozen... There are more than you can keep track of... A polygamy show? There are NONE! You would think that HBO would put a little more into it and milk it for all it is worth.
I think they should give us 12 episodes every year instead of 9 every year. At least it would be a full season.

ITA that the season is too short & there is too much time between seasons. I remember they did the same thing with The Sopranos.(& other shows on Showtime too) During down times some of the actresses have done movies. IMO Big Love is always worth the wait.

I don't remember waiting so long between Sex and the City seasons. How long was it between Soprano seasons?

I don't remember waiting so long between Sex and the City seasons. How long was it between Soprano seasons? I'm pretty sure there was almost 2 years between seasons once on the Sopranos. I just figure that quality television takes more time. I have read that even the short seasons we have been getting on Big Love are taking 6 months to finish! I'm not fond of it put I would rather have short, quality seasons than a long, poorly written and acted show. And because there are not commercials, we get more actual story time each week than in a network show.

Yes the Sopranos did wait a whole 2 years and they paid for it dearly. They lost a lot of viewers, I think it was 2 million and as good as the show was, they never got those viewers back. There is a big risk involved when you wait to long to bring back a hit show. I dont see why with as short as this season was why we should have to wait at least a year for the new season, it doesnt seem fair.

agreed, the wait and the short seasons suck. They were only 4 eps in (to season 4) when HBO decided to sign them up for season 5 - up untill that point the writers had no idea if they would get to continue. They renewed for the 5th season pretty quickly after this last season started b/c the ratings went up. (49% from season 3 premiere to the season 4 premeire, and 13% overall despite superbowl, grammys etc.) You'd think a rise in ratings would also clear them to do more eps? or hurry along with the next season (so they could keep the momentum going)... But, this is HBO - which i often can't make sense of
