What was Anna's comment about Kool Aid about? Was she speaking literally or metaphorically?

Ana was referring to 70's cult leader Jim Jones, who convinced his followers to commit mass suicide by drinking Flavor-Aid that was laced with cyanide. Ana called Barbara "the cult lady".

It makes me wonder if Anna is lying to her fiance, making out like the henrickson's are victimizing her in some way.

Kool-Aid is used commonly now as a euphomism for something that makes you hallucinate/be crazy, as in, 'You've been drinking the Kool-aid.'
I thinks that's how it was being used. And I thought is was a hoot when he said, "Kool-Aid?" asking Ana what she meant, and Barb thought he was offering her something to drink. Nicely written.

Drinking the Kool Aid means falling hook, line and sinker for whatever is being promulgated. It goes back, as has been said, to the Jonestown cult because the people there willingly drank the cyanide-laced Kool Aid because that is what the leader said had to be done. They gave it to their own little children first. It was a horror.
I haven't seen the show yet (I have to wait til 11 Eastern) so perhaps it's not what Anna means, but even if not, the writers must be bringing that metaphor up intentionally.

CharlotteLaurie, you said it much better than I did. You are right about the being taken in aspect of it. It's usually used in a ha-ha sort of way. It is used widely among the younger set. Young adults, I mean.

LOL, the younger set! Can't put myself there anymore!!
Yes, I agree, it is generally used in a lighter way. I didn't mean to sound that the expression was cloaked in horror, only the real event. I think it's usually used in a way that, well, it's always someone else who is drinking the Kool Aid, and usually not oneself. Because 'we' are never that gullible (g).

The kool-aid thing has been explained but this is what Anna said. "The cult lady is here again. She wants me to drink the kool-aid"

meaning their flds / poly lifestyle is like a cult, and she wanted her to just follow along.

Drinking the Kool-Aid simply means buying into the crazy. Ana now thinks the whole poly thing is crazy. She was trying to tell Gorin that Barb was trying to suck her back into it by declaring that the baby is not just Bill's baby but her's, Nicki's and Margie's too.

Wasn't it hysterical when they are speaking in their language and Goran repeats the word Kool Aid, and Barb says, "Kool Aid? No thanks!" It was perfect!
