I wish the old HBO boards were still up and running because there was talk of different cultures that are/were polyandry.
I can't give specific names, but there is one culture that is fairly isolated that allows polyandry, but only if you marry brothers. This is done because they have scarce resources, and it's an effective way of managing the population size. Last I heard, polyandry in this group (which I can't remember the name of) is becoming less popular due to the fact that they now have better access to transportation means and mainstream media. Monogamy is now/becoming the new norm for them.
Also, there was a small group in India that allowed for a type of polyandry. It was a warrior sub-caste. Because the males went off to battle for incredibly long periods of time, their wives were allowed to "marry" another male of a specific lower caste (I don't remember the specifics and the text book I got this from is not here). However, all children born were automatically the first husband's children and belonged to his caste. I tried doing a quick search to see if I can find anything more about this, but nothing specific came up. But I do remember reading this for my anthropology class a couple years ago!

Joseph Smith had several wives whom he married but they were also married to their husbands. The wives lived with their first husbands but were spiritually married to Joseph. Hence the term spiritual wives. The husband was married for time only while the spiritual wives while not actually living with Smith, would be with him in the after life.
All these men gave their consent for Joseph to marry their wives spiritually and some of them were even Non –LDS but were friendly to Joseph and the LDS Church. The spiritual wives were never at any time intimate with Joseph Smith and none of them became spiritual wives with out the consent of their husband.
Brigham Young also had spiritual wives and when Smith was killed, he took a lot of Smith’s wives and married them for time only. Not only did Joseph and Young have polyandrous wives they had polygamous wives that were married to them for both time and eternity.

I mean who do the wives go to in the afterlife? Not to be a smartass, but is there a custody agreement, Smith gets them for 1000 years and then Young for the next 1000?

Zoar can probably confirm this but according to what I have learned, "Time" is the period between our physical birth and death. "Eternity"is forever. Both Smith and Young married women who were married to other men for time. These women would have become the wives to Young or Smith for "eternity" after their (the wive's) death.
