I'd like to hear your thoughts. I rewatched. He appears to have a suit vest and dress slacks on. No socks and no shoes. and I didn't see them anywhere else in the bare room. This was clearly the intention of the writers/directors. They purposely took em off. Did he do it? Someone else?

Perhaps right until the end he was contemplating the suicide... Maybe he took off the socks and shoes to hold a firm grip on the chair so he wouldn't slip before he was ready.
Another thought I had, was that somehow Lura had something to do with the hanging.

I can totally see Lura showing up to the apartment and completely berating him and pushing him to hang himself. She's quite a witchy woman, the way she tried to slowly poison Roman.

i think dale killed himself simply because he must have brought that peice of furniture (chair or stool whatever) with him in addition to the rope. i mean the entire place was bare of furniture - made really obvious by them eating on the floor in a previous scene.
if Lura went there with the intention of killing him - 1) how would she know hanging was a good option if she'd not seen the room/rafters? and 2) she wouldn't have brought a chair without knowing the place wasn't already furnished...

I think poor Dale hung himself after Laura told his wife of his affair with Alby. He was so scared of being outed. Did you see his face when Bill said he would vouch for him in any investigation -- poor thing just broke down. I liked Dale.
I have to say, I actually felt sorry for Alby when he found Dale and he's not my favorite person. It was just too sad.

That's a good point about the shoes. Why would he take his shoes off? I'm sure it's symbolic of something. Mayby there is something important about bare feet between Dale and Alby that we don't know yet? These directors/writers don't do anything without intent of some kind. Remember that off-hand comment about JJs fingernails.....
Maybe his wife confronted him after he came home from work when he was changing out of his work clothes and he only got as far as taking off his suit jacket, socks and shoes when she confronted him and he ran out of the house barefooted. That seems very very plausible to me. (Where he got the rope and chair is anyone's guess.)

Actually... There were stools by the fireplace prior to the incident and Dale was hung by his necktie, not a rope... So it wasn't as premeditated as everyone thinks... I think... LOL.
Maybe he was there waiting for Alby, took his shoes and socks off to be more comfortable...Before he ended up hanged?
When Lura arrived at Dale's house, she looked a bit sweaty and just odd... Like she had this calm about her... Like she knew it was over.
I might be reaching here, but I just don't think it was simply he decided to hang himself. I think Lura might have pushed him to do it. Told him he should be ashamed of himself, that he would be doing his little boy a favor saving him the humiliation of finding out his father was a homosexual, etc. Threatening to out him publically...

Anyone else see the religious symbolism? It reminded me of Mary Magdalene kissing/washing the feet of Jesus, as the form of ultimate love to one who's been martyred to a cause. I'm not religious, though, so correct me if I've got it wrong!

I think Lura told Dale's wife about the affair with Alby, and that's why he killed himself. Maybe he was already at the apartment when he got a call from his wife.
I don't know why his feet were bare. Just a thought, though. There was probably a bed there, since that's where he and Alby were "meeting." Maybe Dale had taken his shoes off to lie down on the bed to wait for Alby, and then got a call from his wife. That doesn't explain the socks, though, I admit.
One purpose of the bare feet from the writers' point of view, though, was to show that he had been there for a while and it was too late to cut him down. The soles of his feet and his hands were discolored from lividity. Nice touch.

I still saw the same thing with Alby. Dale was his savior.
