can someone explain to me what this is? i watched the first season when it aired but then stopped watching when i moved and didn't have hbo anymore. now im desperately trying to catch up. ive seen all the episodes this season and have done as much online research as i can but can't seem to figure out what it is other than perhaps a term for being "put up for marriage" like one would put a kitten on petfinder Oh, wanted to add that this is my first post (yay) and im overjoyed to finally find a forum for this show that is active! it seems most places died back after season 1 which is sad really. this show has so much going on that its almost impossible to understand everything without being able to talk about it with others i know i just spent like 2 hours reading all the threads on here and am waaaaaaay more up to date than i was just watching the episodes themselves. i thought i was observant but apparently not LOL. so yeah, hi!! The joy book is a literal book, where pictures of young girls who are considered marriagable are placed. I think the prophet keeps it and the men of the compound can look through it.
During season 2 or 3, Nicki discovered an old joy book with her picture in it.

jblovessharks welcome to the board!!! I hope you do catch up, there is some great stuff between season 1 and now! Yes the joybook is like a catalogue of underage girls, showing pictures of their faces, the back of their heads, their hands and their feet. Very disturbing.

I also found the Joy Book disturbing. Why show pictures of the hands and feet? Are these seen as arousing to polygamist men? Are they checking to see if the girls have "good working" hands? Whatever the case, it seems pretty SICK to me.

Yeah my husband and I asked each other the same thing when we saw the joybook Nikki was looking through last season..
Maybe some of these mormons FLDS are really kinky and have foot fetishes?

jb - welcome to the boards First off, I wouldl highly suggest that you play catch up and watch season 2 &3. A LOT happened, and though you may be bale to get the general gist of it here... it's defnitely worth watching. Not to sound liek a commercial or anything (LOL) but For $9 / mo you can rent them all form netflix, 2 at a time & probably get caught up in a month's time. OR, check your local library (even cheaper) mine has them all. ok, infomercial done. The joy book was basically a "catalogue" of girls who were eligible to be married - most way under age. The pictures showed front and rear views, feet and hands.... which i just took to mean "hey perv - if you require your 13th wife be 13 years old AND you have a foot fetish - we've got you covered!" ughh...

so basically all women who are aren't already married are in the joy book then? (once more, a petfinder for wives)
cause then why would she be surprised she was in it or be angry CL was going to be? or is it something strictly for very young pretty girls? like, with the expectation they'd undoubtably be paired with a sick pervert..
as for the hands/feet thing, that sorta makes sense to me LOL. i mean, its like looking at buying a work horse - you want to make sure their feet are good so they wont go lame on you. the wives do all the domestic work, it makes sense not to want one thats 'sickly'... tho then again JJ seems attracted to sickly. hrm

Yeah, the hands/feet thing sort of made me think of livestock.
I don't know if all girls get put in the joy book or just some. Maybe Nicki was angry that CL would be put in the joy book too soon? Or at all?

Whatever the case, it seems pretty SICK to me. It's about showing that there are symptoms of inbreeding, I think. If men were in the Joy Book, JJ with no fingernails, wouldn't qualify.

I know there is a religious sect here, who don't have many members in some parts of the country (there was a big falling out in the early 70s; and most of the members in Scotland barring a couple of hundred left), I'm not sure if they still have it but up until the 1990s at least they used to have a 'catalogue' where people would have to at aged 20 (they used to insist on marriage at 16 but due to that being legally questionable in some places; made it 20 worldwide) choose their future spouse from there and they'd only meet for a few hours on the day of the wedding. I don't think it had pictures of hands and feet but from what I have heard it had quite a few different pictures and a description of the person. I read the story of one girl who chose her husband from the catalogue but a few hours wasn't long enough to know him so they went out for the day, in public; the church elders assumed fornication had taken place and put them under what they call the 'shut up' position; ie under house arrest. Then they got excommunicated.
With regard to the hands and feet bit I do think its to see how 'domesticated' the girl is; I have a few Pakistani friends and they said amongst people from more rural areas, when they come around to ask for a girl for marriage they look closely at the girls hands; apparently they can tell if the girl does a lot of cooking, especially cutting a lot of onions; if her hands are too soft it means she doesn't do much around the home and thus won't be doing much for her husband or in-laws.

Well this all makes sense though... Look at Nikki... She works on cars, uses power tools, fixes appliances... A girl after my own heart lol!
Even Roman said it was a shame she wasn't a boy, because she is so good with her hands lol!

In various religious sects arranged marriages are the norm. When a young lady has come of age she is placed into the "joy" book. (I realize that this is a hot button issue, and the actual age of a girl being placed in such a book or other system can vary greatly between different groups). To put it lightly, think of it as a 1-way E-Harmony for fundamentalists. Ok, now to address the hands, feet, head and face issue. This can best be summed up with one word..."EUGENICS"! Oftentimes persons of a fundamentalist mindset are quite prejudice against genetic abnormalities and birth defects. As someone pointed out in an earlier post, had JJ been a woman, his lack of fingernails would have made him much less desirable. By the way....Eugenics for those of you who do not already know is the study and practice of selective breeding for the purpose of improving the species. The practice of eugenics in the outside world is not very common, however it is of greater importance when you have a smaller and limited gene selection pool.

I get the general idea of the joy book, but what I dont understand is this - If the prophet decides who marries who (basicay assigns wives) then what is the purpose of the book? Was it sort of Roman's "cream of the crop" on hand in a book to assist him in bartering? So he oculd basicaly be like " well, john doe if you see to it that what i ask of you is done any one of my most righteous girls could be yours - here take a look" ? LOL
Goofy , i know... but you get what i'm saying right?
