From an LA Times article on 1/9/10: latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2010/01/more-to-big-love-cocreator-will-scheffer-talks-season-4.html#more...Why only nine episodes? HBO [was] really pushing us to get the show airing in January again, after last year’s January debut. So that was difficult for us — the way the show works, the kind of hands-on quality that [co-creator] Mark [V. Olsen] and I have on every single aspect of it. And the only way that they could make post-production ready to have an airable episode for [Sunday] was if we shortened the order to nine. So that’s the only reason. [glow=red,2,300] And so hopefully next year we’ll do 11 or 12, to get back to a fuller place. [/glow] Even with everything that you’re putting into these episodes, it’s still sort of like, wait: only nine episodes? I know. It was, well, OK, we’ll do it, because we wanted to get the show to the people sooner.… If circumstances could have been different, we could have just gone on in March. [glow=red,2,300] And hopefully we’ll go on in March next year, instead of January. And that’ll give us the time we need to do a couple more episodes, and also have a little bit less of a hectic season. [/glow]

Thanks for the link! I think the interview helped me get a better idea of where this season is going, and I think some of my hunches are right.

Big Love has been picked up for a 5th season by HBO , and it looks like seaosn 5 will bring us 10 episodes. (hey it's better than 9, right?) The core cast will all be present in season 5, with the exception of Amanda Seyfried who is leaving the show.( to pursue more big screen roles.) Additionally there is talk about bringing back some key guest stars from this season; sissy spacek and Zeljko Ivanek. The premier date has not been specified at this point, but the 5th season is slated to start "sometime next winter". Writers say that season 5 will slow the pace a bit and be more focused on the storytelling than action. The show has went up 13% in popularity this season, which I'm sure layed a part in HBO's decision to renew for another season. Below are articles sighting the renewal. abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=9742421latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2010/02/hbo-renews-big-love-for-fifth-season.html

I do hope by 'sometime next winter' they DON'T actually mean in the middle or end of 2011; that would really suck. I want them to take time on the show but not so much that we end up with an 18 month or 2 yr break between seasons...
