Looking back at the series and its characters

First and foremost spoilers for anyone who hasn't finished the series.

I doubt anyone is here, the show has been over for years now, but I have no one to talk to about it with, so here's hoping someone responds

It's hard for me to look at certain characters, frankly I don't know what the writers wanted us to think. Particularly Alby, Adeleen and Frank.

Alby has to be the primary antagonist of the entire series (possibly with the exception of Roman Grant). But it's clear that he honestly loves and cares about Nikki (when he considers killing her but realizes he can't). His life went into a turmoil when Dale died. Dale proved he was capable of showing love, and we have to sympathize for Alby, being a gay man on a polygamist compound in Utah can't be easy.

Adeleen, she got rid of JJ, and for a good reason too. Sure she was working with Alby, but she honestly believed that Alby was Roman's successor, and Adeleen grew up with a very submissive mentality. Not to mention, it's hard not to stand by your son when no one else will.

Frank's ending with Lois I felt was very poor writing, Frank seemed like a lowlife evil, counterpoint for his son. He was abusive and domineering and even violent. He didn't ever seem to care about Lois, he slept around, gave her and STD, didn't show any love for his son. So why did he act all nice all of the sudden, why did he do what Lois said.

Finally I want to briefly discuss Roman Grant, a man who obviously is faithful, the Creek is more to him than just politics, Grant does not appear to be particularly lecherous. Even his relationship with his betrothed, Rhonda, more than 60 years his junior, seems to be respectful and their relationship has never been consummated nor does he seem to be solely interested in her for sexual pleasure. Other than polygamy, he has never been implied to be guilty of sexual improprieties (i.e. adultery, child molestation, incest, etc.

Where do you stand on all these characters? I have to say I kind of like them all to be honest, with the exception of Frank.

Alby is by far the most dysfunctional of all of the characters but I just love him to pieces. I was glad Adaleen got rid of JJ and his horrible first wife. I would have done the same thing!

I can't stand Grank but warmed up to him at the very end of the show.

I really wish the show didn't have to end, there was so much more that could have happened.

I'm new here too. I thought these characters were a bit muddy too...though I love all the scenes with Alby in them because I find the actor who plays him so attractive.

Talk about being late to the party. I just watched the entire Big Love Series (well, almost all of it) on Netflix, and what a waste. A waste of my time and a waste of potential. Big Love could have been so much more than it was. A terrific idea for a series, but it's obvious the producers and writers were way over their heads.

Still, the show could have saved itself with a decent ending, instead we get a series final which is one of the worst I've ever seen. I think the subplot involving Frank and Lois was a metaphor for the entire season. Since neither the series or the character were going to recover or get better, it was best to put them down and get it over with.

why did you watch all of the show (or most of it) and then post on a fan forum if it's a waste of time?
And did you just skip to the finale if you only watched "most of it"?

Of course, I think the show peaked in season 3... but it did not all go terribly downhill after that as some have suggested.

And in response to the first post... The characters were shades of gray and not just black and white like a lot of tv characters.

If they make you think about the characters motivations then i'd say the writers did there job.

I'm super exited to discuss Big Love with other people who appreciate the show like I do. It it by far my favorite series of all time.

On to what is being discussed here, Frank's character... Ah what a heartless bastard.. But the show KIND OF redeemed him in the end. I think they were trying to show that even though he is a real piece of shit, there was some shred of kindness in his heart. He loved Lois, and the ending made that clear. Although he was an ate up, abusive, womanizing man. He did love her and have compassion for her somewhere deep in his heart. Maybe seeing her so miserable, literally wanting to die made him realize how much he did love her. The ending scene with them is something I liked, it was in good taste and made me cry. Frank is still a bastard in my book, lol!!!

As far as Roman Grant not being a pervert??? Are you kidding me?? He is the definition of perv. Yes, they never touched too deeply on any sexual encouters between Roman and Rhonda but, if you remember Rhonda's mother telling her (after her returning to the compund, before she flees in the back of Bill's car) "You better still be in tact'' Roman had every intention of having sex with Rhonda but was patiently waiting until they were sealed, but that never happened. There was also a scene in the first season with him and Nicki in her bedroom, Bill walks in and finds them on the bed... Nicki is giggling and her hair is slightly messed up, and he is kind of sweaty. If you own the series like I do, go back and watch it and see if you feel the creepy vibe like I did. Its the episode called home invasion, Wayne's birthday party that Nicki's family from the compound attends at her home.

Anyway, like I said I can't wait to start my conversations with all of you fellow Big Love fans!!!
