I watched a couple of episodes from Season 1 today. Watching these episodes was great - I knew what to pay attention to.
The first episode of Big Love begins with Bill in bed with Nicki. Bill is suffering from erectile dysfunction - was unable to have sex with Nicki & later is unable to have sex with Margene. Bill begins taking Viagra. However, Bill doesn't need Viagra to make love to Barb - Bill & Barb go to an outdoor political event. As Barb is talking to a politician - Bill looks at Barb in a very loving manner & is captivated by Barb. When Bill & Barb leave the political event Bill tells Barb how beautiful she is - Bill & Barb make love in Bill's vehicle. Bill is very happy - so is Barb - Bill & Barb start having an "affair."
I find this interesting because we see the deep love Bill does have for Barb - & Barb for Bill. Bill & Barb were married around eight years when Barb finds out that she has Cancer. When Big Love starts - Bill & Barb have been married for 17 years & Nicki throws a big birthday party for 5 year old Wayne. Bill & Barb facing Barb's Cancer & having three very young children - would have caused both Bill & Barb to turn to God like they never have before. I think it was such a very chaotic time - & if they would have just been patient they would have found their way back without becoming Polygamous. I think this is shown with Bill being able to make love to Barb without Viagra - I think the reference Barb makes in Season 5 to Sarah & Abraham also points out that Bill & Barb would have found their way back after their darkest hours if they would have been patient - if Sarah & Abraham would have been patient & had faith in God that He would fulfill his promise of making Sarah pregnant - there would have been no Ishmael.
Big Love begins with Bill out of contact with his family at Juniper Creek for almost two years. Bill is put back into the Juniper Creek fold with a phone call from Wanda & Joey about Frank. Frank is ill & Bill takes Barbara to Juniper Creek to check on him. Frank is taken to the hospital against Lois' wishes where it is discovered that Frank has been poisoned - Frank & Bill both believe Lois did it.
When Bill & Barb arrive at Juniper Creek to check on Frank in Season 1 - they see Rhonda. Rhonda asks Barb if Sarah is with her - Barb tells Rhonda that she's not because she has school.
Rhonda (who is 15 when Big Love begins waiting to consummate her sealing to Roman when she turns 16) must have played with Sarah in the past because Rhonda is very familiar with Bill & Barb's children.
Rhonda asks Barb about her cancer & Barb tells Rhonda that she had a hysterectomy about 6 years ago. I don't know how long Barb was sick or when she was first diagnosed - Bill & Barb would have been married 11 years at the time of Barb's hysterectomy. Rhonda asks Barb about becoming a Polygamist & tells Rhonda that it's just not that simple. Later Sarah will tell Heather that Barb is a Polygamist because Bill wanted to become one & Barb didn't want to lose Bill - Sarah also tells Heather that Barb says having Cancer made her (Barb) and Bill reexamine their faith.
Rhonda is close to the same age as Margene - but we don't know that Margene was 16 when she was sealed to Bill yet. Rhonda is 15, is sealed to Roman, & is waiting to consummate their marriage until she turns 16. So - there cannot be that much of an age difference between Margene & Rhonda when Big Love begins.
Barb & Bill are both upset with Rhonda being sealed to Roman at 15 & waiting until she is 16 to consummate their marriage. Bill tells Barb "we're not them & they're not us." Little does Bill know that he is much more like Roman than he can imagine. Roman gives an interview where he says that they have rooted out the people who abuse Polygamy & practice marrying underage girls. I believe Roman believes that he has rooted out the aspect of marriage to underage unwilling girls at Juniper Creek as much as Bill believes that it was okay for him to marry Margene.
Lois is upset when she finds out that Bill has married Margene - Lois thinks that Margene is too young for Bill just by looking at her. Lois tells Bill that he is just like his father (Frank) & tells Bill that she raised him better than to marry a young girl. Bill gets Margene to tell Lois that she wanted to marry Bill - that Bill didn't go after her - Margene tells Lois that she (Margene) was a horrible costumer service employee at Home Plus so Bill took her home so she could babysit. Lois exclaims "you married the babysitter!" Margene is unable to convince Lois that her marriage to Bill is okay.
Bill has a dream - Bill tells Don that he felt as though someone was chasing him & he ran into the home & garden area of Home Plus to grab something to defend himself - he tells Don that he heard a taping sound similar to someone tapping their fingers on a hard surface in a pinky, ring, middle, pointer rhythm.
I found Bill's dream in early Season 1 interesting because in Season 5 Alby & Bill do run into a section of the Juniper Creek Mart that is similar to the Home & Garden section at Home Plus. Bill's dream in early Season 1 was very profound considering everything that has happened.
Alby tells Nicki that Bill took her in as collateral for a loan Papa gave to Bill for Home Plus. In the beginning of Season 1 Bill is opening a second Home Plus - Roman still wants 15% from the second store. Bill fights Roman on this but eventually makes a deal with Roman.
Lois' father was an important & smart accountant at Juniper Creek - Lois refers to her father as the true prophet & says that Ben looks like her father. Roman tricked Lois' father into signing something which gave Roman control of the UEB - Barbara describes this as a hostile take over. Lois says that her life at Juniper Creek isn't the life that Heavenly Father intended for her - I found this interesting because in Season 5 Alby tells Adaleen that this isn't what Heavenly Father had planned for him.
We start watching The Henricksons when Bill receives the phone call about Frank being sick - it's been about two years since Bill has talked to anyone in his family. Barb tells Bill that they both promised that they would never go back to Juniper Creek - however - they both do go back.
Also, in early Season 1 it's Easter - Easter will be taking place during The Finale. Rhonda recites the poem The Day Came Slow per Roman's instructions - The Purple Could Not Keep The East (from The Day Came Slow) I found this interesting because there is SO MUCH PURPLE in Season 5.
I think that The Henricksons story for us is their journey of facing Juniper Creek for the last time. The Finale - I imagine - will end in such a way that Bill will never have to face Juniper Creek & everything associated with it again. Bill's issues & lessons that he needed to learn by confronting Juniper Creek will be resolved - for this reason I think it's why our journey with The Henricksons ends too.
The day came slow (till five o'clock)
Then sprang before the hills,
Like hindered rubies or the light
A sudden musket spills.
The purple could not keep the east.
The sunrise shook from fold.
Like breadths of topaz, packed at night,
The lady just unrolled.
The happy winds their timbrels took.
The birds in docile rows
Arranged themselves around their prince
(The wind is prince of those).
The orchard sparkled like a Jew.
How mighty 'twas to stay
A guest in this stupendous place,
The parlor of the day.
