I don't have nearly the memory most of y'all do, but don't I remember that Bill was supposed to be the Prophet due to his dad's position in the FLDS? And somehow Roman stole that birthright from Bill? Maybe Roman thought if he could keep Bill happy and prosperous off the compound, he wouldn't have to worry about him trying to claim his rightful inheritance. Of course, I could have the whole thing wrong. ;D Roman was a pragmatist. The deal he made with Bill was not just a loan/payback, it was that Roman got a cut of the profit from Home Plus. He bought into the business. The big fight they were having in the first season was over the opening of a second store. Roman was wanting his percentage of the profits of the second store, and Bill was saying that the deal was on the first store only, not the whole Home Plus franchise. Roman could see that Bill was a successful businessman, and he just wanted a cut of the action. I don't think he was threatened at that point about Bill coming back to the compound. Roman just wanted to keep an eye on Bill and have some sort of leverage over him.

After reading all of the responses to my response...I rest my case. ;D All of your different readings of how and why Nicki and Bill got together and how and why Roman figured into it are valid; depending on whose story you believe. I'm not sure any of the three of them even knew the whole story!

If I remember correctly, Bill did own H+ when Barb was sick. The loan from Roman was to keep the store open since presumably all of Bill's money was going towards Barb's medical bills. JMO, but I think that Roman may have initially balked at the idea of Nicki marrying in to the Hendrickson clan, but it was most likely Adaleen who got him on board with the idea of the in-house spy. You could be correct on the time line, but that still doesn't answer the question of why Roman would make Bill powerful. If Bill did own the shop but was at risk of losing it due to Barb's medical bills, that would benefit Roman. Without money and power, Bill would've been a nobody. Roman would've had nothing to worry about and wouldn't have needed Nicki to spy. All of Bill's big moves since season one have in some way included or relied on money and status from Home Plus. Didn't Roman get like 30 or 40 percent of Home Plus's earnings?

Nope. Roman got 15%. But according to the understanding Bill had, it was only for the first store. Roman wanted 15% of the earnings of the entire franchise.

Roman just wanted to keep an eye on Bill and have some sort of leverage over him. This makes the most amount of sense to me. If Roman didn't see Bill as a threat, then loaning the money wouldn't have been that big of a deal, and would generate more income for Roman without him really having to do much. But then I also think that Nicki wasn't originally married off to Bill in order to make her a spy, but it was probably more a case of having to get rid of a daughter that should've already been married. In this case, getting Nicki married to Bill would've been a bonus for Roman in the business transaction.
