I'm sure you all have already discussed this, but I can't find the thread. Do y'all have a theory as to why Selma dresses like a man? In the beginning, I thought Selma was Hollis' brother, but she's his wife??? Is she a stand-in to cater to Hollis' gay tendencies? Is she a transexual? What?

I'm not sure why, but I thought it might have something to do with a sign of authority. Like she dresses as a man because she has power second behind Hollis. Several of Hollis wives also ware pants and have their hair cut short compared to the women on the compound so I think they do things a little differently. When Selma was made to ware the dress I think it was supposed to be degrading.
On a side note I also thought it was interesting that Selma was Roman's sister.

To the best of my knowledge, nothing has ever been said about Selma's clothing or her generally butch appearance. My guess is that Selma would have been a lesbian if lesbians were tolerated in FLDS culture. Probably the Grant family let her marry Hollis so she would be in Mexico and not an embarrassment to them at JC.
Like the degrading observation, Marie. And Ably made Nikki wear the compound dress and planned to kill her in it. Maybe the compound dress is the FLDS version of the burka, a sign of the subjugation of women.
Does anyone remember any dialogue regarding Selma's appearance?

Does anyone remember any dialogue regarding Selma's appearance? All I remember is that when the Greene compound was attacked by Roman's men, Hollis called Bill and said something to the effect that he and his "brother" Selma had been humiliated and Bill would have to pay. Selma then got on the phone and it looked like she had shaving cream smeared on her face. I think this was the season when Bill was courting Ana -

Probably the Grant family let her marry Hollis so she would be in Mexico and not an embarrassment to them at JC. I always thought Selma was straight and seemed to be madly in love with Hollis. Remember how jealous she was when Hollis kidnapped Barb's niece and she thought he might be attracted to her? (even though I think he was looking at her as a daughter, not a lover) And how freaked she was when Lois hurt Hollis? I think Selma dresses like that to show that she was leader in their community, not a subserviant woman like the ladies on JP. I always liked her character, I wish we would have seen the Green's this season. Hopefully they will schedule them in

I don't think we'll ever really know what's behind the why of Selma. It adds a little mystery to BL, it keeps us all wondering & asking.
Here's a little something I found online; however the mystery remains!
"Martin is also well known for her recurring role on the HBO series Big Love. Her character, Selma Green, is unique: the cross dressing sister of polygamous cult leader Roman Grant and the senior wife of his rival polygamous cult leader Hollis Green. The character has sparked much discussions on fan forums due to her as of yet unexplained transvestism and bizarre relationship with her husband (who refers to her as "Brother Selma").
"Sandy Martin (born circa 1950) is an actress who has over 60 film credits and has been an actress, producer, director and writer in professional theater productions."

Thank you all for your input. Selma's always been a mystery to me, and I thought surely something had happened to explain the way she dresses - and that I'd just forgotten. I never thought of it being a sign of authority, I always assumed it had something to do with her sexuality, or Hollis'. An interesting POV. I'm gonna have to think about that. Oh, I forgot. This isn't real, so it really doesn't matter. I get so involved with the characters sometimes, I think they're real.

I think Selma was in love with Hollis, definitely not a lesbian, but I do think she is also a transsexual. If she hadn't been FLDS, she might have gone through the process and surgery to become a man. I agree that referring to her as "Brother Selma" was showing her respect and treating her as an authority, but dressing her as a woman when they tried to marry Kathy off to Hollis was to make her subservient -- you could tell she was clearly humiliated and felt degraded. She also was very angry and jealous.

this is years late but i am watching the series for the second time so I had to google "why did selma wear a suit?" And it makes sense the answer I got. She was a hot head and a thug that wasn't accepted at Juniper Creek so she ran with the other morman (the greens) crew. Long story short she wore a suit to intimidate the people she beat up. (she was sent by her husband who ran the greens crew) greens is his last name but I think the crew was named something else.

Yes, the answer is quite logical. The solution suggests a simple, do not change the command.

I am looking for a Dose of Nature Review as I am remarkably keen to take on a couple of fresh CBD brands on my on-line CBD shop(https://cbdoileco.com). I managed to find some very good reviews on infinityvapelab.com but it is not quite what I am looking for. If anyone is interested in partnering up with me on starting a brand new CBD on-line store in the UK, please let me know. Cheers
