I read "Escape" by Carolyn Jessop last week. (I'd recommend it btw, much better than Flora Jessop's book "church of lies")
anywho....
Towards the end of the book, after Carolyn had "escaped", she was having a hard time making ends meet with 8 children to support and being unable to work ft due to a sick child. So as she's talking about how each time she was really destitute something comign long that got her by for awhile (financially) one of the examples she gave was sewing clothes for the show Big Love.
Apparently during one of those "OMG how am i gonna pay the utility bills?" moments the phone rang. On the other end a friend informed her that the costume designer for Big Love was in town and looking for someone to make authentic FLDS clothing. She got the gig and for the next month sewed several pairs of "long underwear" for the show.
I just thought that was kind of interesting... that the costume designer would look for "real life" flds'ers to make "authentic" compound clothes.... and that the ong underwear adaleen and JJ wore could have been made by a woman who fled short creek.
Made me wonder how "authentic" the rest fo the crew have tried to be. ?

Hi
I read that also. I'm pretty sure that they got the pastel dresses from the now defunct FLDScrafts.com (which I believe was run by the wives of Merrill Jessop's son who was jailed last November for marrying underage girls) they are just TOO authentic to be copies, I know they did this 'what would you do in this situation' on a news programme a while ago, basically where some people posing as polygamists were in a restaurant trying to co-erce a 15 year old into marriage (hmm no-one noticed though that the women actresses all had roots or very bad bleach/dye jobs!) and I know they got the dresses from there. At the very least they got someone ex-FLDS to sew them....

I'll look for the book. After reading it I'll let you know what I thought. Any other book suggestions about poly?
