I find it interesting that Joey -- who grew upon the compound and still lives on the compund today -- functions so smoothly in the outside world at Bill's campaign events. (Seems totally comfortable in a business suit, schmoozes with the Congressman and Marilyn). Obviously this is because of the many years of experience that he had in the outside world when he was a football player. Seeing this, it is interesting that Joey is married to Wanda, who is the one person from the compound who would function LEAST smoothly in the outside world (even the people on the compound think she's a freak!)
I would love to learn more about Joey's football career! He spoke with Marilyn about how he was in a Super Bowl (although on the bench). What team did he play for? I have to assume that he went to college and played college football -- a college education would also help to explain how he functions so smoothly in the outside world.

Joey was a Dallas Cowboy and was on the '92 Superbowl team. Because he played professional football, we know that he also had to have gone to college, as you have to have been out of high school for three years prior to entering the pros. You aren't required to go to college, but they all do for those three years - it gives you more experience and the scouts will be looking at you. I guess four years in college as well as time as a professional athlete has really prepared him for schmoozing.

I'd like to know why Joey was forbidden to contact Bill in the pilot episode, only calling when his father was dying. Something happened there that I hope the writers address. Despising Roman and the compound, OK, but to cut off contact with his brother. Why? It's always bugged me.

During the first season Bill and Barb both were anti Juniper Creek... They wanted to be as seperated from JC and the people there as possible.
Not only that, but I got the impression Joey would always call Bill for help when he was in trouble with drugs or alcohol. So that was probably what Bill was assuming Joey was calling for.

I think back in season 1 Joey was one of the things that kept pulling Bill back to JC, and agree at that time they were trying to keep completely away and separate form JC.
Barb says to Bill I thought we weren't going back? when nicki take margene there bill says he never wanted her to see it, etc.
I also agree Joey's previous drug / alcohol problems probably played a large role in why Bill wasn't happy to hear from him.

I feel bad for Joey as he had found a way off that compound-- as I recall he was injured got hooked on pain killers & alcohol-- can you imagine having no place left the go but back there- at least he has Wanda-- as crazy as she is she loves him -- the issue I have with Joey is at one point he wanted to leave and barbofferred to help--he said he didn't think he could survive off the compund-- how sad --he like niki & alby are damaged--plus at Bill is nasty to him, but when he needs him, Bill is noce-- thisis another issue , poor Joey has to endure, being compared to the almighty Bill, when in reality, joey is far better a person

I cannot stand Joey, what a waste of skin. He's weak, good grief if nothing else get a job working with Bill and come up enough to gain a seriously decent position within your brother's company. The transition from the compound can be done while living with Bill and his family. Surely, they could help him and lil' loca along.

Joey was working for HomePlus as a truckdriver until his fiance' was murdered by Roman. That is when he came apart again. Until then, he had been making good progress, all things considered.
