Please, someone enlighten me about this one. Barb is sitting in church and is greeted by a woman bishop? Are there women bishops in the LDS church? Or is Barb about to realize that there are lots of religions out there in which she could be a priest, a bishop? Talk about LOL! Barb to Bill: I'm becoming a Methodist.

Within the LDS Mormon Faith, it's definitely a He position. *Check out all of the He's below:'
"The bishop serves as president of the ward's Aaronic Priesthood holders (generally young men between twelve and eighteen years of age) and is responsible for all their activities. He is an ordained high priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood and is the presiding high priest and common judge for the local congregation. As such, the bishop determines the worthiness of all members of his ward and directs the performance of sacred ordinances. He often spends a great deal of time visiting with or interviewing congregation members. He determines their worthiness to receive callings to serve in positions of Church responsibility, to participate in sacred ordinances, to receive the priesthood, and to do temple work. Where there is need, the bishop may be involved in counseling or administering Church discipline for members.
The bishop is also responsible to ensure that all Church ordinances are performed and recorded correctly. His direction or approval is necessary for baptism, confirmation, administration of the Sacrament, blessing and naming of babies, and priesthood ordinations for members of his congregation.
He is responsible for receiving and accounting for financial contributions of ward members and disbursing funds necessary for local Church programs. (See Church Welfare Program.) He also disburses funds and provisions he determines are necessary in caring for the needy within the ward. He arranges for and conducts funeral services, and may perform marriages (if allowed by local law)."
I agree, Barb now sees that women can/do hold these postions within other faiths. I think she just needed a quiet place/church to visit Heavenly Father.

I took that scene to mean that Barb is getting involved in some liberal splinter-group that broke away from the LDS Church, that allows women to hold the priesthood and positions of authority (such as bishop).

I replayed the scene in the church. The Lady Bishop greets Barb by name, "Sister Hendrickson," and says something like it's nice to have you back with us again. She then asks Barb is Barb would like to come to her office and share, and Barb says something like, no than you, I'm fine. SO....Barb has been in this church before, this church uses the term "Sister," and this church has a lady bishop. Where/what is it? A feminist LDS?

The church started by Emma Smith, (JS's wife) & Joseph Smith III, (JS' & Emma's son). In the rlds, there are many similarities coupled with differences. Women are allowed to be bishop & PH, unlike the LDS. Polygamy isn't allowed. Here's a link that explains: mrm.org/rlds

Thanks, Duets. the RLDSl sounds like the right place for Barb. Of course, she would have to get over all that marriage for time and eternity stuff.

Yes, the RLDS (today known as the "Community of Christ") allows women to hold the priesthood. But Barb might be uncomfortable with the CoC's not following several major LDS doctrines:
No polygamy No eternal marriages (not even for monagamous couples) No eternal progression (i.e., no "Men can become Gods") No temple rituals (such as endowment or baptism for the dead) De-emphasizing the Book of Mormon

Barb definitely has her own ideas about the right combo. She needs a cafeteria church where each person can pick the ingredients that would work for him or her. I think Barb would like priesthood for women, polygamy, eternal marriage, temple rituals. Not sure how she feels about the Book of Mormon. We know she doesn't want to be in outer darkness, so she may want them all to become gods on their own planet.

Oh, I agree, I think she definitely believes in family being for forever -- even if she isn't quite sure what church has the authority to make that kind of sealing. But, as she grew up in a traditional LDS household, I don't think polygamy was something she ever truly accepted in her heart, or truly believed was a commandment of God. I think she went along with Bill taking Nicki as a second wife because she really thought she was dying and didn't want Bill to be alone or her kids to be without a mother. But then she lived, and the whole thing sort of spiraled out of control -- Bill bringing Margene into the marriage (who was clearly too young, even if she had been 18), the short lived disaster with Anna, the Mother of the Year mess (which would have been a great honor, if she had been a "normal" LDS wife), the public humiliation when Bill outed them after his election...

Remember in season 4 when Barb told Bill she thought she didn't need him anymore? She was referring to her call to the priesthood, or, in other words, her belief that she could have a direct connection to God and didn't need Bill as a middleman. She may well believe that she will have a connection with God after death and so will every individual in her family. She, nor they, would need to have the family bonds transcend death because they would all be together in the presence of God. Maybe she is making her own beliefs that transcend both the polygamy-leads-to-eternity-together view and the Mormon view of sealing-leads-to-eternity-together. Look at all the questions that the sealing concept has raised for her. Who is her mother sealed to? Barb's father or her current husband? She was sealed to each of them.

Good points, I just wanna touch on 1 point you raise, Normally when like the wife remarries due to death of a previous husband, the is sealed for 'time & eternity' to the first hubby & then only for 'time' to the 2nd hubby. I don't know or remember if this is the case w/Barb's Mom?
