My husband and I were discussing some mistakes with the writing in Big Love. For example, in the first season (and I believe it might have been the first episode), Margene is on the phone with her mother. She tells her mom that she was hoping that, after she got the boys down for a nap, the two of them could watch a video. Now, saying this could only mean one of two things:
1. Margene's mom was aware that Margene was living in polygamy and could simply leave the kids under the watchful eye of a sister wife
or
2. Margene's mom would be at her house, and probably had already been to her house. This would mean that the first time she visited wouldn't have really been the first time and not that big of a deal.
Have you found other blips in the storyline?

There are lots of blips in these storylines...
Such as Alby's number of wives! I mean first he had 3... Lura was out of love and the other two out of the principal... Then suddenly there was 4 out of the blue and even more children... Now there is like 6 or 7 from last episode and lots of kids, some of which are teenagers... Which I don't understand! What the heck is going on?

Marge was 22 when the series started (5 years older than Barb's oldest two), then three years later she was still in the 22 range (now only 3 years older than Ben), now she's 19.

Alby certainly seems like the kind who would scoop up some extra wives whenever he sees fit. That could probably explain the plethora of wives he now seems to have.

Oh there are a tone of mistakes. I noticed that one about Margene's mom in the Pilot too.
One I find quite funny was that they forgot to make Joey Jr get older. If I remember correctly he was born before Margene was even pregnant with Nell (or at the very least not far along with the pregnancy). But come season three Joey Jr and Nell look to be the same age.
Another one that's also funny is, at the start they kept mixing up the names of Margene's kids. It changed several times between Lester and Aaron which one was the oldest.
The timeline in general is a bit messed up but not as bad as it could be after a bit of re-watching I think I've worked out what it is supposed to be approximately.
Between seasons 1 and 2 there was 2 weeks (They actually say it.) Between seasons 2 and 3 there has to be about a year. (Margene wasn't even showing in her pregnancy and when the season started Nell looked about 6-9months old.) Between seasons 3 and 4 again a year. (For no other reason than some time has past and all the kids are bigger) Season 4 kind of covered a decent chunk of time because it was winter by the end of it and I think they said there was 4 weeks between the seasons 4 and 5.
So that would mean about 2 and a half years of time has past in Big Love land. But 5 years of real time so the kids have all got 5 years bigger. Wayne had a 5th birthday in season 1, and Ben had a 16th birthday in season 2 (or maybe 1). So going by that:
Ben should be 18 (believable) Tennie should be 10 (she was 8 in season 1 but said she was 13 in season 4, that doesn't make any sense.) Wayne should be 7 (he looks and acts like the 10 year old the actor is) Raymond 6 (he looks way too old) Lester 4 (believable just but Margene said on her blog he'd just turned 5.) Aaron 3 (fair) and Nell should be almost/just 2 (fair).
It would seem some of the kids have aged the 5 years the actors have aged while others have aged the 2 and a half years which time has past on the show
I'm not quite sure how you worked any of those ages out. Margene had a birthday in season 1, it wasn't celebrated but Barb mentioned it when they were doing the schedules. Later in that season Margene is lamenting to Sarah about waking up one day and realising she's 21 married and with 2 kids. She also said she was 5 years older than Ben this still fits. Her age hasn't been brought up since then that I remember. So add two and a half years makes her 23, minus the two she lied about makes her 21. Where on earth are you getting 19 from? She's been married to Bill for 5 years.

Marie, If Margene said that Lester had just turned 5, then she has been married to Bill for at least 5 years and 9 months. Barb and Nicky did not know she and Bill had been intimate before marriage so we know Lester was not an "early"baby.

You seem to have missed the point of what I was saying, and infered things which I never mentioned or even thought about. No where was I suggesting Lester was an early baby, you've come up with that all by yourself. 5 years and 9 months is still 5 years. The point of my statement was that she's been married for [/u]at least that many not less, which would be the case if she was only 19, like was suggested.

I know that two weeks past between season one and two, but I don't think that any seasons are supposed to have had a whole year pass by in-between. Sara was 18 in season three. She told Scott that she was 18 and in college, and later admitted to still being in high school, but still 18. Now, Heather has just finished her first semester of college. At most, Sara can only be 19. I think it is only supposed to have been about a year to a year and a half that has passed since season one.

[/quote] I was not trying to imply anything and my statement about Lester was to show that they had been married closer to 6 years which further reinforces what you said; The timeline is all screwed up! To further show that the timeline is messed up, Margene's Blog's first entry is dated March 2006. She talks about meeting Lois which happened in the first or second episode. Margene already had the two boys so she would have married a minumum of 18 months. And that's if she had them literally back to back! The more we look at the information, the more confused it gets!

I was getting 19/20 from the fact that she would be the same age as Sara based off the information we have been given.
Season 1 she was 21 now 5 years later (Give or take a few months) She should be 26. She was more than likely 15 when she got pregnant with Lester 15 plus 5 is 20. If Lester is really 4 years old and she didn't get pregnant until she got married then she's 19.
Last season, I think, it was said she was 3 years older then Ben. I remember talking about how they had changed that from past seasons. Now she's only 2 years older than Ben and the same age as Sara and Heather.

Heres another one, in season two Lura was Alby's 'new' wife, we didn't see her before then. Therefore it could be assumed that Thomas and all the other medium sized kids were Alby's with that 'she wolf' wife who was grovelling at him because he hadn't had a child in x amount of years, yet when Lura went to the women's refuge she took Thomas and all the other 5, 6 and 7 year old looking kids with her. its never been mentioned she had kids before and they were from a previous marriage and the way they were talking it is as though they are Alby's biological kids.

First season they said she was 5 years older than Ben. Ben was 16 at the time (just got his license). Now, Ben is about 18 (just graduated high school). Since she's really 3 years older, that would make her 21.

We don't know if she's really 3 years older than Ben. If she was 15/16 when she came to the family that would have been about the same age as Sara and only a year older then Ben.
