I'm having a hard time adjusting to the new "cram as much as possible in" pace that show has taken this season. I thought with the 1st ep / premeier it was just b/c it was the premier... but now it seems it just set the pace for all the eps to follow.
I feel like too much is going on, and in the process we're missing the more personal connection with the characters.
is it just me?

No it definitely isn't you.
This show could be so much more. I just don't understand why we are being cheated this way.

It feels like this season is totally 'action'; as opposed to 'dialogue' based, or a good balance of the two, as a former Doctor Who junkie in the 80s I remember that was one thing blamed for the shows original demise. Then again they only have 9 episodes maybe they shot more and had to edit it in such a way that it almost feels like a 'recap' not an actual episode...

I completely agree. The storyline seems a bit jumbled... and very rushed... (a bunch of randomness thrown together as quick as possible). I felt uncomfortable watching it... I hope that the next shows are more coherent and smooth. This is my favorite show on earth! I'd hate for that to change.

Previous seasons have felt more meticulous, for sure. You could really feel the evil of Roman and Alby, you heart racing because of just how detailed every evil little scene was. Now, I have to pause it every so often just so I can absorb what I have watched.

I hope they will rectify this next season and give us a big season...Like 15 episodes.

I'm watching episodes over and over and over to see what happens.

this season sucks... Getting rid of Roman was a bad mistake so they brought in JJ who is just a psycho.
they ran out of ideas...thats why they're running with the gay shit. Another poor episode and I might call it quits with the show. First two seasons were awesome, season 3 was good but season 4 is just awful so far.

I'm still giving this season a chance. I think it has a lot of potential but I am also prepared for it to be a huge disappointment.
At least Roman is here as a ghost. That in itself was hilarious. Right after gay sex, Alby getting dressed and Roman sitting there telling him all about himself lmfao!
It was as if Alby was hearing his father's words too.
I wonder if Alby will truly commit suicide at the end of this season.

Ok, so it's not just me then. I wondered b/c after recommending this show to a friend of mine repeatedly... she finally rented the dvds and played catch up right before this season began. One of her comments during season 2 was " um, when does stuff start happening?" which just kind of blew me away - i definitely felt like alot had happened to that point. I just think she wasnt as into the characters as I was ; which could be due to her rushed viewing of seasons 1-3... no time to absorb. ya know?
so i wondered if it was just me having a hard time absorbing the mad dash pace of this season. I guess not.
I have been rewatching episodes as well... there's just so much going on action wise, and so little going on in the way of character development (I guess thats the right term?) that I feel like i'm watching a preview rather than the show most of the time.
I also am really missing the indepth look at the characters that made me love this show; love them or hate them individually... i grew to feel like i knew them. ya know?

I think that the writers figured that Big Love fans already had enough time to get to know the characters. So they decided to shell out the drama "Soap Opera" style for Season 4! I can't say that I like the pace, but I do find some of the story lines to be quite interesting (i.e. The Cara Lynn Situation, Ben and Margene Sexual Tension). I would have to say that I am not very impressed with Bill's senator crusade B.S. or Barb's antics at the casino. What ever happened to Home Plus? lol

I agree that we've had time to get to know the characters. It's not that i'm against alittle more action on the show at this point either. It just seems that there's too much going on action wise. These charcters are all going thru changes... some of them major and yet I feel like we're missing that in any kind of depth. we're seing their actions, but only glimpses of the emotions.

I totally agree with the OP. I too was hoping the first episode was rushed because it was the season premier. They need to slow things down a bit and let things develop more. Bill is about to drive me crazy with his "never enough" attitude.

It is definitely rushed but I feel thats only because the writers have so many plates in the air. Its pretty obvious that they want the show to take on a different tone. The new opening just doesn't put me in the positive mindset the "God Only Knows" one did. I know they wanted something less tongue in cheek since the show is getting increasingly more...intense, but this marked shift feels forced. Last season had loads of action but I never felt it was at the expense of the characters or dialogue.
