It would be better if there was not a negative stigma associated with medication for depression, anxiety, sleep disorders.
In the 1950s doctors used to prescribe women speed. I have a collection of medical journals dated at that time on "How To Treat A Housewife. The stay at home mothers would go to the doctor and explain to the doctor how tired they were. Being a housewife should not be tiring because all a housewife does is sit around all day painting her nails, curling her hair, playing bridge with her other housewife friends. These housewives were tired and found it more and more difficult to wake up at 5am to clothes prepared for everyone, cook breakfast, send children off to school, send husband off to work, clean up breakfast, iron, clean, run errands, order groceries, prepare dinner, listen to husband speak of adult work conversations, news, and political activities. The wife had no idea what was happening in the news that day political or otherwise. Her adult conversation of the say was with the man that delivered her groceries. They discussed the new labels on some of the foods. The wife gets her husband's suit ready for the next day of work. Get the childrens close ready for the next day. She cleans up dinner. As she attempts to get a few curlews in her hair and some lotion on her face her husband ask about the papers for the B&W account she was supposed to pick up Although she was on her way to do this, she was stopped by a phone call telling her that her son was hit with a baseball and is requiring stitches. The housewife goes to tend to her son. She decides got pick up the papers the next morning. The next morning the plumbing pipes break. No one can bath dad has shower cream on his face and the kids are full of soap. Housewife remedies the situation using a pitcher to get the toilet reserve water out (it may seem gross but the water is clean, mother's are resourceful why do you think we here "Mother Invention.") It's another day of breakfast accompanied by finding a plumber. She rushes the B&W papers done to their office. Goes back home after running two simple but needed errands medication for an ear ache for one her children then to the post office. She gets home only to find out that the plumber came early and left.......
These are the types of stores in medical journals. Doctors gave the women speed to keep them going and able to satisfy their husband in the bedroom. I see a lot of what Barb is saying about the demands and pressure. It has been 60 years since the Medical Journals I have on "How to Treat A Housewife." Not much seems to have changed.
I wonder what doctors are giving now? I'm happy that Barb said what she said. Women do need a support system. For some reason there seems to be the notion that being a wife and mother is easy. I want my family to look good, be healthy, nurtured. My husband has said to me on some of the most challenging exhausting days that I have had "I had an okay day we had a meeing that was catered by olive garden, then, our meeting at the hotel was catered by the hotel .... and let me tell you about this one desert it was made on a plate you could eat ... your day must have relaxing.
I had been no where were edible plates were available. I ate an oreo that had fallen into my child's car seat because I was starving and drink a two day old diet coke that had been left in the car. I had so much to do I didn't have time to go anywhere to get something to eat.
I think that Barb is doing too much at once. She is doing almost everything. On top of that, she is very critical and harsh on herself. I wish Bill would have said to Barb about Marilyn "it's easy to get into jams you know how many you have helped me get out we'll fix it and it was very smart of you to put all of the pieces together. But I am happy that when Bill fired her, Bard would not let that happen.
Bravo to all of the moms and dads out there! Moms and Dads are the best. I think that Dad's would agree that Mom's deserve a special pat on the back, a tierra to wear while out doing errands, lots of thank yous, and a massage every now and then.
