As far as I know Rome was a BBC show originally, but yes its true 6 seasons are not guaranteed for HBO shows and these days like many other tv companies they only decide to renew for another season based on the ratings of the first few episodes of the current season. Therefore no HBO show these days is automatically guaranteed for six seasons...

From what I have read the BL writers didnt even know if they would get to do season 5 untill 4 eps into seaosn 4 when HBO renewed them. Also, i read that the writers where going back and forth on whether or not to have JJ / marilyn return for season 5.
There's been no confirmation on season 6 yet... and I doubt they'll get one untill they get a feel for the ratings of season 5.

That has pretty much ben par for the course; they renew for the next season after seeing how the current season goes over. So far it has been about episode 3/4 when they announce whether there will be a next season.
