So, I was commenting on Margie get married when she was about 18 years old on another thread and this got me thinking, she didn't go to college, which got to me thinking about how much education each character has.
Now, at some point Barb apparently finished her degree in social work, though it's not mentioned whether this degree is a bachelor's or a master's. I can't imagine a nice girl like Barb from a good Mormon family not marching off to BYU at age 18, so I'm assuming she had a bachelor's and just earned the master's.
And what about Bill? You can't seriously run for State Senate and not have at least a bachelor's degree. So I'm curious if he went to college or not. Is this where he met Barb? And how did he he manage to pull himself together after being a lost boy and a thief to get a GED and then a college degree? All whilst populating his household with celestial babies to support? I want to know more about this.
Nicki obviously hasn't been and has great hopes for her daughter...my hope for Nicki is that she gets to go to college one day. Maybe be a nurse like she dreamed?
Margene seems to be pretty successful without but maybe a degree in business administration?
I realize I'm dorking out here but I'm from an academic family so everyone went to college. How common is college attendance in Utah?

Barb's family are the ones who Bill talked about taking him in and showing him real love after he was kicked out. I just assumed that they helped Bill get into BYU.
Last season Barb was upset that Sara hadn't chosen their alma mater BYU

In real life, on most flds compounds the children dont receive higher than an 8th grade education. (some sources say a 5th grade level) That's a much bigger education issue to me. So since so many other aspects of the show are based on real life ... I wonder how many of the shows characters (from the compound) fall into that catagory ?
I think it was stated before that barb went to grad school. Bill? Cant recall anything being said. Nicki - I think she feels that boat has sailed and is trying to make up for the losses in her life by making sure cara lyn doesnt end up on the same path. Margene - is doing just fine without, as many entrepreneurial types do, and hasnt ever shown any interest IMO.

I think some of the men on the compound have higher educations, I remember Alby saying at one point he went to law school for two years so he at least went to college. But I agree as whole the lack of education is a big problem with compound life, especially those seeking to leave it.

Yes, Margene does not seem academically inclined. She's making a very good living with her business so there's really no need.
Nicki I think might be a different story. I think her hope for Cara Lynn does reflect her own missed opportunities. I think she is coming into her own this season, and maybe this is something she will consider.
I'm wondering how old Bill and Barb were when they got married, and the age differences between Bill, Barb, Nicki, and Margene.

Also, when did Barb get a chance to finish that MSW? The last we heard she'd been kicked out for nonpayment of tuition. And then we didn't hear anything about it for ages.

Seeing as to how Barb's attempts at psycho-analyzing people have failed miserably, I would say she didn't finish. LOL!.

I could almost swear that we heard Barb talking about how she and Bill dated in college at "The U" (abbreviation in Utah for University of Utah - BYU is known as "The Y")

I thought I heard Barb mention something about her degree this season, but I could be mistaken. I have an MSW myself, and I would think that after finishing an MSW (which usually comes with coursework about the oppression of various groups, including women), Barb would have wised up and left.

The writer's probably don't have an MSW and wanted to write that situation a certain way.

I think Barb finished her Masters, and I definitely remember that she and Bill both went to the University of Utah. I would figure that Bill has his MBA. I mean assuming he's 25 years older than Margie who is 21-23 (they've given a few different ages for her, 23 in S1, and 21 in S2) he'd be right around 48. Sarah is only 18. Most Mormons start having children by the time they graduate college so I figure he must have taken some extra time to finish his degree before starting a family at age 30ish. ***
Sarah and Margie have no college. Nicki probably wasn't educated past age 14, although we do know that some compound women, like Lura, did go to college. Alby too went to some business school if I remember correctly. Ben wants to go into the Air Force academy.
Did Bill go on a mission? If he was LDS around age 18 its more than likely that he would have...

Also, to add to the general confusion, in today's episode Bill said he and Barbara had "18 years of marriage." Ben's 17 or 18 years old, and Sarah's older than that. So, how does that work out...?
