I know Mormons read the Old and the New Testament, which are considered a very important part of their religious canon. What sets them apart from Christians is their belief in the Book of Mormon.
I don't know enough about the BOM itself to comment on its contents, though. Where are the doctrines concerning polygamy and the celestial kingdom located? Anyone know?

From my understanding the book of mormon condemns polygamy in the book of Jacob, but, it does say that under certain circumstances the Lord wants them to engage in polygamy. Maybe one of our mormon members can elaborate or correct me where I am wrong. I have asked a ton of questions about it myself lol.

The doctrines & covenant is also a seperate book - just as the bible and book of mormon are comapnion book. Here i rippe dthis explanation form a website: "The book of Doctrine and Covenants is one of the standard works of the Church in company with the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Pearl of Great Price. However, the Doctrine and Covenants is unique because it is not a translation of an ancient document, but is of modern origin and was given of God through his chosen prophets for the restoration of his holy work and the establishment of the kingdom of God on the earth in these days." the website is: scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/introductionand has explanation and basic info.

Here is some answers to all your questions.
It would be interesting to see what the LDS Church would do if polygamy were made legal. When the LDS Church was petitioning the Federal government in court to have their property restored it was agreed by all parties concerned that the Manifesto which ended polygamy would be in effect throughout all the Church until the present system of things changed. If polygamy ever did become legal that system of things referred to has been changed. It would be in the LDS’s court then so to speak.
I have been on LDS blogs where this scenerio has been discussed being what they would do if the prophet said that polygamy had been reinstated. IMO it would be just as difficult to accept it as it was when it was introduced before. There would be some people that would embrace it and others would leave the Mormon Church. The good news in all this is that all the fundamentalist groups would collapse. There would be absolutely no marrying underage girls and no woman could be forced to marry a women she did not want to be with. Compound living would be a thing of the past.
Now as to the Book of Mormon being a companion scripture to the Bible here is a scripture from the Bible that can explain it.
16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
And this from the Book of Mormon:
“Wherefore, the fruit of thy loins shall write; and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord.”
The sticks represent the records of Judah which is the Bible and the records of Joseph which is the Book of Mormon. The prophet Lehi in the BOM was a descendant of Joseph.
Moving on, as to the BOM talking about the celestial kingdom, you will not find it there but in the Doctrine and Covenants. Nearly all the Doctrine and Covenants are a collection of revelations received by Joseph Smith concerning Church government, Priesthood authority, ordinances, missionary work, nature of God and Christ. Section 132 is the section the fundamentalist argue refers to the practice of polygamy. This, in a nutshell, is the “Principle”
I hope I have answered all your questions. If any one has any more feel free to ask.

Thanks for taking the time and answering the questions, Zoar! I have to say, though, that I disagree with this: The good news in all this is that all the fundamentalist groups would collapse. There would be absolutely no marrying underage girls and no woman could be forced to marry a women she did not want to be with. Compound living would be a thing of the past. I don't think the legalization of polygamy or the LDS Church allowing polygamy will mean that fundamentalist groups collapse, compounds become extinct, or that marrying underaged or unwilling females will stop. There will always be groups of people that don't agree with the mainstream and do what they want anyway, whether they be fundamentalist Mormon or a different faith (or non faith) background. I think those types of situations will unfortunately always exist, inside and outside of the Mormon faith and polygamy.

I agree aliensummer... It is like saying that if we legalize all drugs, there will be no more gang activity. Thank you Zoar for answering our questions.
