I think she did it to piss off her mom, plain and simple. lol
The statement was big F-U , especially showing up to a sealing dressed that way. I just thought she was trying to make her mom feel as outraged as she did.
I loved that she did it.

When I saw Nicki my interpretation was that it was a sort of regression to her adolescence...if she hadn't been from Juniper Creek, she would have totally had a side ponytail and a jean jacket. I also thought maybe it was sort of a f**k you to the JC community, who are treating her like a pariah. And a reaction to Adaleen's comment about dressing like a prostitute.

I don't think Nikki would have been 15 in the 80's though. Nikki is right about 29-30 years old according to all the signs in the show. That would have made her 15 in the mid 90's, not the 80's.
I think the 80's are making a comeback style wise and she went out and bought the sluttiest outfit she could find to make a statement to her mother lol!

I agree, it was some kind of regression... Truth is, it was probably many things wrapped up in a mini skirt and side pony tail.

You are right on Nicki's age...if she was sealed to JJ at 15, got pregnant right away and had Cara Lynn when she was 16, and Cara Lynn is about 15 now, that would make Nicki about 31 now. However, according to the age sheet Barb read to the credit card company in Season 1, Nicki's birthday is 11/18/74 (which is Chloe Sevigny's birthdate). I found some cool info about that age sheet, which helps clarify the ages of the characters -- although there are errors and inconsistencies on it, at least it gives an idea of what the writers originally intended: www.tv.com/big-love/eviction/episode/455986/summary.htmlIf she was born in 74 and sealed at 15, that would be 1989. And she would have been a young, impressionable teenager in the late 80's, and would make her 35 now. She could have been married to JJ for 5 years before having Cara Lynn -- did it ever say how long she was married to him? Her character bio on HBO says she came to be Barb and Bill's nanny in her early 20's. I don't think Nicki just randomly went out and bought a slutty outfit, or that she has enough of a clue about fashion to try to pull off a retro look. She did choose an outfit that would have shock value, and really contrast her with all the high necked, long sleeved, long skirted dresses the other women were wearing. She ratted her hair and did a wild side ponytail, totally in contrast with their prim neat French braids. And she told her mom, "This is who I am inside" -- which makes sense. Inside, she is a teenage girl who never got a normal childhood, never got to experience going to high school or dating or experimenting with clothes or makeup. She is a teenage girl who was forced to marry a horrible older man and bear his child at a very young age. Nicki is constantly rebelling against her past and her upbringing. She went through compulsive shopping and gambling phases, she lied for years about trying for a baby when she was taking birth control, etc. Those clothes expressed who she wanted to be, who she would have been if she hadn't been raised at JC.

I think there was a strong significance in how ALL the characters dress, and it has a real meaning in the story.
The clothing worn at Juniper Creek puts the residents there in a totally different place in time. It make the women modest and quaint, but when they get out in the real world, it makes them look freakish and out of place.
Remember Cara Lynn in Washington DC -- how she hated dressing like a normal teenager, said it made her feel naked, but then when she saw the caricature the street artist did of her and how weird her hair looked, she felt humiliated. And then when she tamed her hair down (when she brought Ben's stuff to Sarah's), Ben noticed it and went out of his way to say she looked nice.
Nicki sewed school clothes for Cara Lynn, and the dresses were not as antiquated as her clothes from JC, but still were old fashioned and modest (enough to get her teased at school). Now that Cara Lynn is back at the compound, Adaleen made a point to criticize her clothes (which are just starting to look like a normal teenager's -- didn't Adaleen say Cara Lynn was dressing like a prostitute?), and sew matching dresses for herself and Cara Lynn, whch is just...weird. But it makes all of the women look alike, like they are all "sisters" no matter what their age differences. If a 15 year old girl looks and dresses exactly the same as a 55 year old woman, maybe it makes a 60 year old man feel like the 15 year old must be fair game for him to marry, too.

I hadn't thought about how all the women dressing alike, regardless of age, might send this message. I agree that the character's wardrobes do say a lot about them. Nicki with her more modern version of prairie clothes (well, up until recently), Barb with her Molly Mormon fashionable yet demure outfits, and Margie with her somewhat suggestive clothes. (Though in all fairness, I think in some other environments, Margie's clothes wouldn't really be considered as provocative.)

Oh yeah and poor Wanda! She was having some kind of psychotic break? She's such a broken character. Oh yes. "Where's Cara Lynn?" "She's in the nursery with the ponies." Wanda has snapped. Maybe that's the terrible foreboding.
